Pre-concert talk by musicologist Roderick Swanston at 5.30pm: Composing on the Periphery
Each composer whose works feature in this programme confronted writing a string quartet from outside the central German tradition, and each in different circumstances confronted the tradition differently. Three of them took a nationalist approach, though in Dvorak’s case a highly personal one. Shostakovich, on the other hand, confronted his twentieth-century legacy with one of his most personal statements, so personal it was infused with quotations from his oeuvre.
