STRANGER BY THE LAKE
Dir. Alain Guiraudie / France 2013 / 97 minutes / Certificate 18
Tickets £15 + booking fee (includes free swim)

Summertime in France. Franck spends his summer days hanging out at a lakeside cruising spot, its bright beach and clear water punctuated by mostly nude men idling the time away in conversation, eyeing each other up and occasionally repairing to the nearby hilly woodland for a friendly fumble.

Franck spends a good bit of time in platonic conversation with Henri, a middle-aged man whose wife has recently left him. But really he has eyes only for Michel, the handsome, moustachioed newcomer whose allure remains intact – or is it even enhanced? – when Franck witnesses him coolly drowning his current beau.

Scenes of a highly sexual nature. Suitable for over 18s only.

Winner of Best Director (Un Certain Regard) at Cannes Film Festival.

★★★★★ “The sexiest and most elegant thriller in years” RogerEbert.com

★★★★ “This stunning psychological drama takes place in an atmosphere of frank homoeroticism, utterly without inhibition or taboo” Guardian

★★★★ “Acutely brilliant on the funny, scary machinery of desire… It’s categorically not for the faint-hearted, but the good ones never are.” Telegraph
