'Beyond Beauty: Transforming the Body in Ancient Egypt' explores the importance of appearance to ancient Egyptians, in life and in death, showing extraordinary artefacts that were found and brought to the UK's regional museums by pioneering Victorian archaeologists. Objects of toiletry and adornment that date back as far as 3,500 B.C. offer an intimately human view of the daily lives of the ancient Egyptians and of their belief in the need to keep up appearances especially after death, and the exhibition culminates in a magnificent display of mummy faces, cartonnages and coffin fragments in the upstair galleries.
