Mixing R&B, funk, jazz and samba elements, Banda Black Rio were one of the first to undertake the fusion of Brazilian rhythms with international Black music. Formed in 1976, the band's unique and pioneering samba-jazz-funk sound has attracted thousands of worshiping fans across the globe.

Banda Black Rio is considered one of the most important bands in Brazilian music history. The group - founded in Rio de Janeiro by the renowned saxophonist Oberdan Magalhaes - was a pioneering force in the funk-soul scene of Brazil, with their albums Maria Fumaca (1977) and Gafieira Universal (1978), bringing them both critical acclaim and worldwide fame.

After the death of bandleader Oberdan in 1984, Banda Black Rio initially stopped touring, but in the 90s they were rediscovered by DJs such as Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay, Incognito fell in love with their grooves (and covered Expresso Madureira) and a host of artists (including Mos Def) have dipped into their catalogue for samples.

The resurrection was complete in 2000 when Oberdan's son - William Magalhaes - took the lead and released a new album - Rebirth. In 2011 followed the acclaimed Super Nova Samba Funk.

Banda Black Rio's philosophy has remained unchanged over the years: celebrate the musicality of Brazil through strong lyrics and a unique blend of jazz, funk, soul, samba and Gafieira.

Line up: William Magalhaes (MD keyboard, piano and vocals), Thiago Silva (drums), Andre Vasconcellos (bass), Issac Negrene (guitar), Nilson Batata (percussion), Rodrigo Revelles (Sax), Serjao (trombone), special guest Jay Phelps (trumpet) and special guest Angelica Sansone (vocals)
