About Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s chorus of powerful harmonies emote the struggles and passion of South Africa. The warmth and charisma of founder and composer Joseph Shabalala, a man who has survived apartheid with his spirit whole, shines through Mambazo's music – their captivating Zulu harmonies are a proud, strong homage to the jubilance, power and beauty of indigenous music. After they employed their music to celebrate the end of the apartheid era, Nelson Mandela publicly called Ladysmith “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors”, following his release from prison.
The group sings a capella isicathamiya and mbube music – loud, powerful choruses contrast with softer, almost whispering chants where voices blend harmoniously, combined with tightly-choreographed dance moves that keep the singers on their toes.
