In the eighteenth century Trinity College was given an astonishing collection of early editions of Shakespeare, together with books assembled to provide a contemporary background. The donor, Edward Capell, was a pioneering editor of Shakespeare. His library proved to be an inspiration for the editors of the Cambridge Shakespeare a hundred years later, a project followed in turn by the work of W.W.Greg and R.B.McKerrow. This lecture will take the tale of Shakespeare in Cambridge down to our own times, including recent gifts to Trinity College.
