If you think you might be interested in keeping bees, but don’t know what’s involved or how to get started, this one-day taster course will give you an overview of the craft of beekeeping. Our experienced beekeepers will cover all the fundamental requirements for bee and hive management and give you a real feel for the art of beekeeping and a good understanding of whether or not this is a hobby you wish to pursue.

This 5-hour course begins with a classroom tutorial followed by practical demonstration at our apiary. You will learn about the honey bee colony and beekeeping year, how and where to set up an apiary, bee behaviour and the role of the beekeeper, essential equipment, honey extraction and processing, bee stock and some specifics about urban beekeeping and legislation. You will also get an understanding of the cost and time involved along with the benefits you’ll reap in return.

The day will culminate in a hands-on experience of visiting the apiary and inspecting inside of the beehives. Protective beekeeping suites will be provided, but you’ll need to wear a long-sleeved top and long trousers and bring along a pair of wellies and washing up gloves. Please do not apply perfumes or aftershaves.

Following the taster session, the more comprehensive Introduction to Urban Beekeeping 6 week course is recommended for those serious about the craft as keeping bees in an urban environment requires careful consideration and specialist knowledge. All of our tutors are BBKA Certified in Beekeeping Husbandry and a Certificate of Attendance will be given to participants upon completion of each course.
