Foraging has been popular for some time now and enthusiasm for the practice of gathering food from the wild is only growing…even in the cities. Whether you would like to forage for personal enjoyment or learn it as a ‘survival’ skill, this course and identification walk covers the basic guidelines you will need to follow in locating, collecting and preparing wild foods and medicines. Within London’s densely populated urban environment you will find an abundance of edible and medicinal wild fruits, vegetables, plants and fungi and at Woodberry Wetlands alone there are more than 70 species. Your tutor will introduce you to resources and techniques to help you identify common varieties and show you how and when to harvest the most useful parts of the plants.

You'll learn how to cook, prepare and preserve the plants you find and test your tolerance when introducing new wild foods to your diet. You will be thrilled by the array of greens, fruits, saps & sugars, nuts and seeds you will be able to unearth and, if properly prepared, how delicious they can be. You’ll get to sample some prepared wild foods from our reserve witnessed in raw form throughout the day and take home recipes and preparation instructions.
