Do you ever worry what happens to the contents of your recycling bin after it’s collected? Well, fear no more. With this series of sustainable craft courses we will show you how to put your rubbish to good use. If you have a creative spirit and are interested in conservation, you can do your part to help the environment whilst making some amazing home and personal accessories to keep, use as gifts or even sell. During this month long series of weekly workshops, you will learn that, with a little bit of effort, you can turn worn out clothes and textiles, plastic carrier bags, fizzy drink tins and plastic bottles into enviable contemporary possessions. Held on Wednesday evenings in the New River Studio at Woodberry Wetlands, each 2 ½ hour workshop will be tutored by an expert in their field and focus upon a different craft discipline utilising recycled materials. As the bulk of the supplies needed for these crafts come from our bins, it is an amazingly inexpensive hobby to boot….not to mention fun and social!

Wed 11th May – RECYCLING WITH RAG RUGS Rag rugs were commonly made in households since the 19th century by using odd scraps of fabric on a background of old sacking. More recently revived with a modern twist, Rag Rugging is now a popular and sustainable contemporary craft and used to produce a range of home furnishings, fashion accessories and art pieces as well as the more traditional rug. During this workshop you will learn how to plan a rag rug project and to use the hand tools and materials for the two main techniques. You will practice using different recycled materials, colour palettes and techniques to understand the unique textures they produce before embarking on your first project. With the tutor’s assistance designing your look, and selecting and preparing materials, you will begin to create either a cushion cover, bathmat or piece of art as your debut. You might not finish the project by the end of the course, but you’ll be fully prepared to see it through to completion at home…and then you’ll be hooked!

Wed 18th May - PULL TAB & BOTTLE CAP JEWELLERY The final workshop in the series will focus upon the impressive trend setting jewellery you are able to magic from the humble fizzy drink tin and the unassuming aluminium bottle cap. Using some simple tools and your imagination, you will learn to transform these simple receptacles into stunning accessories that you will treasure. Each participant will make at least one pair of earrings, a pendant necklace, a ring box and either or bracelet to take home at the end of the course.

Wed 25th May - CARRIER BAG CROCHETING Crocheting with plastic yarn, or “plarn”, is a fun and fashionable way to re-purpose those dreaded plastic bags and this workshop will focus upon creating reusable and durable alternatives to the carrier bag itself. Open to both complete beginners as well as more experienced crocheters, the course will begin with a demonstration of how to transform prepare plastic carrier bags into plarn. Participants will also be shown how to consider the colour, density and texture of the bags when preparing them for their project. Once the plastic yarn is prepared, those who are already comfortable with chaining, single crochet stitch, slip stitch, half double, and double crochet stitches, will be ready to launch into to creating the full pattern designed for this course. Beginners will first learn the stitches before embarking on a scaled down version for the first project crocheting with ‘plarn’. You tutor will be on hand throughout to coach you through the pattern and help with technique whilst you create your fabulous accessory to take home with you.

Wed 1st Jun - PLASTIC BOTTLE HOME FURNISHINGS & ACCESSORIES This workshop is an absolute haven of creativity. There are literally thousands of nifty decorative and personal items that can fashioned from an average old plastic drink bottle. You will coached through a variety of projects t
