A talk on the little-known life of Raymond Russell (1922-1964), founder of the Russell Collection of musical instruments and discoverer of the early 19th century female operating theatre of St Thomas's Hospital where the talk will take place.
Russell was a troubled child of British aristocratic and German Jewish origins who went on to have a hugh impact on the development of the harpsichord in the 20th century and in the revival of early music as a whole.
What led this man of colourful background to seemingly eccentric collecting habits and ground breaking discoveries?
Refreshments will be served.
