For the final concert of the season, we’re pleased to introduce Dominic Grier who is rapidly becoming acknowledged as a young conductor of exceptional talent, working as regular guest conductor with most of the major British ballet companies and the orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

The evening has an all-Russian first half, beginning with Borodin‘s overture to Prince Igor, one of the the country’s most significant operas. The overture – which contrasts a brisk Russian dance with a sensuous clarinet melody – was in fact left incomplete on Borodin’s death and was finished by Alexander Glazunov, whose Violin Concerto features next in the concert. This technically brilliant and virtuosic work will be performed by the hugely talented young Korean violinist Soh-Yon Kim, one of the Royal College of Music’s brightest string stars.

Closing our season will be the ever-popular and radiant Symphony No. 2 by Brahms. Pervaded by a cheerful and almost pastoral mood – written as it was in the space of one summer holiday in the rural atmosphere of southern Austria – this symphony also has some dark and reflective moments, but ends optimistically in a ‘blaze of joy’.

As always, you are warmly invited to join us for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm.
