Africa Writes is the Royal African Society’s annual literature and book festival which aims to promote contemporary African writing and writers as well as to explore Africa’s long literary past and its future. Every year Africa Writes showcases established and emerging literary talent from Africa and the Diaspora. There is a rich and vibrant programme of book launches, panel discussions, performances, workshops, and an international book fair.

This year, we will be celebrating our fifth anniversary, showcasing some of the best writers and thinkers in contemporary African literature. 90% of the festival is free. Our three ticketed highlight events include: Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi who will be sharing her experiences on being a woman writer (£10/ £8/ £7); some of London’s finest poets giving us an evening of performances and uncensored conversations in ‘Sex, Love and Poetry’ (£10/ £8/ £7); and up and coming playwright, Joy Gharoro Akpojotor staging a performance of her provocative new play ‘The Immigrant’ (£8/ £6/ £5).

A headline guest speaker from Africa Writes 2014 said: “I had always thought Africa Writes is a wonderful platform for African writers." (Ghanaian writer and Commonwealth Prize Winner Ama Ata Aidoo.)
