The Hand & Lock Festival of Embroidery returns in 2016 with a programme of day-long workshops and exciting evening talks. The festival was initially conceived as an opportunity to celebrate embroidery and share know-how, but is now recognised as a gathering of embroidery enthusiasts wanting to develop their skills and attend fascinating industry talks.

On the 19th July, day two of the festival is a workshop teaching an 'Silk shading.

Silk Shading, also known as painting with thread is possibly the most artistic embroidery skill you can master. Students will learn how to blend coloured threads to produce depth and realism in their embroidery. The class covers the basics, insider tips and practical application making sure students are fully equipped to go on and apply what they have learned to their own garments and interiors.
