Lúčnica is an extraordinary group of musicians and dancers, who bring tradition to life on stage. Their dances, choreographed and staged for contemporary audiences, bring these centuries old dances and styles to us. The group use their youth and grace to transport us to a rural idyll of music, colour and motion.
Lúčnica have been translating the culture of Slovakia through dance and music for nearly 70 years, here they perform their world famous show, reviving the spirit of these traditional crafts. With colourful costumes and crescendoing live music, their dramatic dancing tells humorous, heart wrenching and poetic folk tales; its a playful, poignant and captivating experience.
Following in the steps of Smetana and Bartók, Prof. Nosal, has guided and trained Lúčnica to present a grand sensual feast from the traditions of Slovakia – a small country at the heart of Europe. The dancers, in vivid costumes from regional dress, carry us through spring, summer, autumn and winter, with their smiting, weaving, pottery and, of course, a wedding.
Lúčnica have been celebrated around the world, coming back to London, four years after their last sold-out visit, for only 1 performance at The Barbican on 11th June.
“Lucnica, the Slovak National Folklore Ballet from Bratislava, Slovakia, is absolutely first rate. Its young dancers sparkle with glittering technique in an eye-opening repertory that remains true to its surprisingly diverse sources...” THE NEW YORK TIMES (USA)
“Nowhere else could we see such a great liveliness, love and joy of home region dance and music. With their talent and sheer beauty and excellent looks, these dancers are absolutely dazzling ambassadors for their country and culture.” THE CANBERRA TIMES (Australia)
“If dancing is the expression of joy of human life, there is no doubt that we could not find better proof of this principle than the generally beautiful show performed by the Lúčnica ensemble.” THE CHINA DAILY (China)
