Although still in her twenties, Alice Zawadzki has already developed into a stunning musician in the vanguard of the post-modern contemporary jazz scene, with a list of accomplishments that is long and impressive. First introduced to jazz at twelve years of age Alice earned a BMus (hons) in violin before graduating with an MA in jazz voice and composition from the Royal Academy. Along the way, she’s been the recipient of scholarships from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, the Jerwood Foundation and Scottish Arts Council and has been selected to participate in jazz promoter Serious’ “Take Five” Edition X artist development programme. Her own songs are self-described as about “mischief, whimsy, magic, inebriation, loss, exodus, prejudice and above all, love”, while her sound is earthy, organic and satisfying. A breakthrough artist of the highest calibre. Jamie Safiruddin is one of the brightest pianists of his generation. Although still only 24 he already commands universal respect for his fluent and skilled playing as well as his versatility. He includes work with the likes of Ian Shaw, Claire Martin and Tony Christie on an impressive CV and is currently touring the world with Will Young, who I happen to know thinks he's just great. Tonight these two young Lions of the UK scene have got together to present their jazz-based take on the Joni Mitchell canon (the first of two tributes this month to Joni, see also Monday 18th) in the company of Matt Herd-sax, Conor Chaplin-bass and Will Glaser-drums. Expect a mix of classic and lesser known songs from the Queen of the singer/songwriters delivered in the unique and captivating style that characterises Alice's work, supported by Jamie's clear, melodic playing, with some sax from one of the UK's up-and-coming musicians to add just a bit of spice.

“She is a genuine original with a pure, pealing voice”Guardian; “Zawadzki… beautiful – a real force to be reckoned with” Jamie Cullum; “Safiruddin conjures up refreshingly different harmonies... beautiful” Jazzwise
