World-renowned virtuoso percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will be the subject of a live portrait sitting by Tanya Raabe-Webber at the iconic National Portrait Gallery on Friday 22 July, exploring and celebrating the diversity of our common humanity.

Portraits Untold, funded by Arts Council England and in partnership with The Big Draw and other national venues will see acclaimed disabled artist Tanya Raabe-Webber undertake four live portrait sittings with high profile sitters across the country.

The sitting will take place in front of a live audience, who are encouraged to draw their own portraits of the sitter and explain their own creativity and diversity through traditional drawing and the use of digital drawing apps.

Evelyn Glennie is considered one of the world's foremost percussionists and is the first and only full-time solo classical percussionist. Profoundly deaf since the age of 12, Evelyn has since made it her personal mission to 'Teach the World to Listen'.

Evelyn will be experimenting with sound throughout the sitting at National Portrait Gallery by playing percussion instruments, including a surprising one and listening to the sound of the brush strokes by amplifying the sound through a special microphone attached to the canvas.

The event, which will also be streamed live online, has been devised to reach new audiences through a variety of platforms to make art more accessible.

Drawing materials will be provided, and audience members with smart phones and devices such as tablets are encouraged to download free drawing apps such as Sketch Book Pro before coming to the event.

At the end of the project, the completed portraits will go on display in each venue.
