Following the success of Carmen and The Marriage of Figaro, Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose are back with their new English version of Verdi's La Traviata. The story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations.
Set in the 1920s prohibition era of speakeasies and bootlegging, with Violetta’s lover Alfredo, a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by time at the front in the first world war, Violetta’s protector ‘the Baron’, a gang boss, and Alfredo’s father, a crooked politician, this new production reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties.
