Having played at The Gallery Cafe back in May, Tony Black and the Collectors have already established themselves as one of our favourite acts.
Tony Black writes upbeat, catchy, observational songs about life, loss, work, and the joys of public transport, incorporating eclectic influences while never losing sight of his love of two-and-a-half-minute pop classics. He has just finished ‘One Less Thing to Carry’, his third album and the second with his band the Collectors (Xavier Fernandez: Drums, Ben Galinsky: Bass). The band’s sound has been described variously as: “a cross between Billy Bragg and Bagpuss”, “The Violent Femmes playing Wire and Thomas Mapfumo”, and “The White Stripes meet The Proclaimers”, but also as “resolutely English”.
