We begin with some wonderful 17th- and 18th-century English settings by William Lawes, Maurice Greene and William Boyce, before listening to the tradition of metrical psalms cross the water to America. Music by Charles Ives, Ned Rorem and Eli Tamar represent the more sophisticated American repertoire, before we return to two English masterpieces by Samuel Wesley (‘In exitu Israel’) and Jonathan Harvey (‘I love the Lord’).

Greene: O God of my righteousness
Kent: My song shall be of mercy
Boyce: O be joyful in God, all ye lands
Boyce: Save me, O God
Boyce: The Lord is king and hath put on
Stephenson: Against all those that strive
Stephenson: Preserve me, Lord
Henley: O God, whose former mercies
Billings: Princetown
Wesley S: In exitu Israel
Cole: Mount Zion
Pye: Psalm 99
Ives: Psalm 90
Thiman: O that men would praise
Wood: My soul truly waiteth still
Rorem: Mercy and truth are met
Harvey: I love the Lord
Tamar: Hallelujah, Praise the Lord
