'DON'T YOU KNOW IT'
Solo exhibition by artist Maria Vesterinen
28th September - 2nd October 2016
Opening night 28th September 2016
Maria Vesterinen is a Finnish artist based in Helsinki. She graduated from Kingston University with her MFA in Fine Arts in 2015. Her works have been exhibited in Europe, Australia and the US. The title plays with the idea that the viewer may not get that they are looking at images of sex toys, and the idea that we still feel that discussions about sex are taboo, even though everyone does it.
“Sex is the biggest nothing of all time.” -Andy Warhol “But you can't argue that the world isn't in an unhealthy moral state."
"Wouldn't think of it dearest. People lie, cheat, rape, swindle, kill, maim, torture and destroy. Bad thing. People also pop into bed together and cosy up. Good thing. If we think fucking is a sign of moral decay then we're a little bit stupid-stupid, aren't we?” -Stephen Fry, The Hippopotamus
"There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion." -Francis Bacon
“Filling the gap between explanation and weird act with stories- that's indeed what contemporary art is all about.” -Young-Ha Kim
“I think that people's sexual preferences are a legitimate subject for humour, dirty humour if at all possible.” -Christopher Hitchens
