Intimate Spaces

How are the notions of neighbourhood, community, home and ownership represented in an increasingly dense and populated city? This is the theme for Intimate Spaces, part of NOW Gallery’s new series of annual photographic displays, that will encourage a contemporary discourse on modern life and the human scale by engaging with progressive London communities, through the lens. Content may also draw on the experience of filmmakers, writers and thinkers to be translated into compelling visual displays.

Inspired by George Plemper’s Riverside School series portraying communities in Thamesmead from 1976/79; Intimate Spaces will present a snapshot of the progressive communities that surround NOW Gallery on Greenwich Peninsula. The exhibition will allow a rare and intimate insight into the many notions of ‘neighbourhood’ and ‘community’ that exist in 2016.

Intimate Spaces will bring together George Plemper’s work, along with a new collection from four young photographers, documenting the growing neighbourhoods that make up Woolwich Arsenal, Thamesmead, Greenwich Peninsula and Eltham. Over a period of three months, photographers Cian Oba-Smith, Nina Manandhar, Carlos Jiménez and Ingrid Rasmussen have each shot one of these areas, revealing a glimpse into the intimate spaces of the communities they document, all in the spirit of George Plemper.
