A one woman verbatim show about single mothers. Written and performed by a single mother.

In the UK, there are around two million single parents.
9 out of 10 single parents are mothers.

The single mother is frequently portrayed as a feckless teenager, getting pregnant to get a council flat, and raising ASBO children at the cost of the taxpayer.

But what is it to be a single mother? Raising a child, or children, alone can be a rewarding, yet isolating experience. As a society, we rarely hear the voices of real women who raise their children alone, often in poverty, often disempowered and sometimes vilified.
Single parent households have been the hardest hit by tax and benefit
reforms since 2010: those in single parent families are twice as likely to live in poverty as those in couple parent families, and recent years have seen this situation escalate, with the current "war on the poor”.

Funny, frank and authentic; collated from hours of interviews with lone parent mothers, Muvvahood tells a story of single motherhood in the "age of austerity" when the most vulnerable members of society are facing hardships and prejudices not seen in decades.

Written and performed by Libby Liburd.
Libby Liburd is an East London based writer and actor. She is an Associate Artist at Stratford Circus Arts Centre. She trained at East 15 Acting School, and is the single mother of a teenage son.
