As a reaction to Brexit, and the ill-informed, emotive, and at times chauvinistic discourse surrounding its debate, Dan Cimmermann reflects on the current condition of the British Identity.

Through a process of working and reworking layers of paint and pen whilst defacing the classical works of 18th Century portraitists, Cimmermann creates new narratives through the art historical elite of long gone generations. As an emblem of wealth, power and ultimately the state, Cimmermann’s rebellious works undergo defacement as a way for the artist to liberate himself from the societal rules of old, in search of a new value system.

Cimmermann’s intimate works are widely appealing, encapsulating the figurative, expressive, abstract and urban genres. This new body of work personifies the voice of a generation overwhelmed by, and yet sure in their dissatisfaction with the current system of politics.

Having exhibited extensively throughout the UK, including twice at the BP Portrait Awards, Cimmermann now brings his new collection of mixed media paintings and etchings to RISEgallery for an exhilarating and insightful show.
