Charlie’s Chaplin’s The Kid (1921) – running time 52mins
‘A picture with a smile – and perhaps, a tear’
Charlie Chaplin’s first ever feature length film is a masterful blending of his comic genius and sentimentality. The Little Tramp finds an abandoned baby in an alley and raises him as his own. Five years later they are committing minor crimes together, evading the police and the orphanage. All the while, the child’s heartbroken mother longs for a reunion with her son.
Buster Keaton’s The Scarecrow (1920) – running time 19 mins
Marvel at Buster Keaton’s incredible stuntman prowess in this short film, which includes three minutes of him being chased in and out of windows, up and down ladders and over building tops by an extraordinary dog - no CGIs or special effects here.
Both films will be projected onto a big screen in the atmospheric surroundings of Alexandra Palace’s great hall, accompanied by the Palace’s Grand Willis Organ. This will be played by Donald MacKenzie, silent-film accompanist expert and resident organist at the Odeon Leicester Square. Get your ticket in advance and come along for a rare showing of this classic silent film.
