2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, a catalytic event and a turning point in the story of Ireland’s independence. This seminal moment, which is rarely taught in Britain, has created the cultural climate between both nations which is felt to this day. This project is an opportunity for England and Ireland to reflect on their last 100 years of shared history and pro-actively learn about each other through the eyes of the Irish Emigré in Britain. This elucidative experience will open up questions of inter-generational importance, and raise issues of emigration; conflict; multiculturalism and the importance of shared
history.

Projections is the culmination of the work of artists, academics and community groups in London, who have mapped this story to allow audiences to experience their history in an original way. The public will be able to immerse themselves in the rich and complex history the two nations share. The history of any country is woven through stories, events, forgotten moments, generational divides and unconnected dots; Projections will unravel this narrative and present it so that each event can be understood in context.

Timelines will be visible underfoot, providing an ever-present context map for the audience; around them will hang 100 successive sheets of diaphanous green canvas that illustrate historical events and stories. This will be free for the public to explore at will, allowing them to learn at their own pace as they move through history
