The Brick Lane Gallery opens a special Christmas time exhibition title Them & Other Stories, which includes new and returning artists from our previous exhibitions this winter. An eclectic mix of works on paper, mixed media pieces, paintings and photography, this exhibition gains its titled from Olivia De Quatrebarbes’s series of paintings Them. In this body of work, she presents different characters influenced by emotions who ‘live discontinuously, but are all part of the same act’. All the artists featured in this exhibition are in fact people living apart from each other, in different continents and working with different media, but are yet all part of the same contemporary artistic scene and dipped into the same creative force. Peter Blond brings his ballpoint pen works and other drawings that echoes the black and white figures of De Quatrebarbes’ images. While on one side Suzanne Garnier-Weythman presents elaborate artworks giving homage to the her favourite creatures as the hummingbirds, on the other side Stephen Clifton presents abstract works with mixed media elements that aim to address the fleeting nature of society and its elements. Minjoo Kim figurative paintings create an interesting dialogue with Ekaterina Sergeeva’s abstract works dominated by bold colours and shapes. Colour is at the core of the practice of MadSnow, who identifies colour as the bridge between fantasy and artistic creation. The digitally manipulated works of this Italian artist comes into juxtaposition with Paul Whitehead traditional paintings of London life.
