About Chinese New Year 2009: Year of the Ox
As the Chinese New Year 2009 draws near, preparations are once again underway to prepare for this very special event. The London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) would like to thank for your continuous generosity and support.
2008 was an exceptional year in view of the Beijing 2008 Olympics and London 2012 with crowd attendance in excess of 300,000 throughout the day. For 2009, Chinese New Year day falls on Monday 26 January.
Traditionally, the London Chinatown Chinese Association holds the Chinese New Year celebrations on the first Sunday after new year’s day. The intention for 2009 is to hold the event over a two day period, on Saturday 31 January 2009 and Sunday 1 February 2009.
· Saturday 31 January 2009 –‘back to basics’ for the benefit of the community.
There will be lion dancing in Chinatown only (Gerrard Street, Lisle Street, Newport Place, Wardour Street and Macclesfield Street) from 1pm until 6pm with stalls throughout Chinatown .
· Sunday 1 February 2009 – Main celebrations
Trafalgar Square
o Main stage program from 12 noon until 6pm with International artists from Shanghai and from other Chinese provinces, lion and dragon dances
o Food court
o Promotional stalls and marquees
Leicester Square
o Fireworks and Firecrackers
o Promotional stalls
Chinatown
o Lion dances
o Non food promotional stalls
Shaftesbury Avenue
o Performance areas for local artists
o Non food promotional stalls
