140 Athletes compete for 12 gold medals

Shooting is another disabled sport which is often played alongside able-bodied competitors. Able-bodied competitors have been taking part in shooting competitions for more than a century; however, it is only since the early 1970s that disabled participants have also got involved.

The rules for Paralympic shooting are similar to those for able-bodied counterparts and the sport is currently practised in more than 50 countries worldwide. As with the able-bodied competition, shooting either involves the use of a pistol or a rifle being shot towards a stationary target. Each target has 10 scoring rings, the central one known as a bull's-eye is worth 10 points. Competitors can either shoot standing or sitting at distances of 10 metres, 25 metres and 50 metres away from the target.

In the Paralympic shooting programme there are men only competitions, women only competitions as well as mixed competitions. Men only competitions used 40 shots whereas the female and mixed competitions have 60 shots. Once the top eight competitors in each category have been found a final competition with 10 shots decides the winner.

As Paralympic shooting is open to all types of disabilities, the competition is split into two categories, the first being competitors who can hold the weight of the firearm unaided and the second being the competitors who require a shooting stand.

Shooting has been in the Paralympic games for over two decades since it made its debut in current form in 1976. Unfortunately, shooting has diminished in popularity over the years yet still remains part of the Paralympic programme.
