198 athletes compete for just 2 gold medals

The concept of seated volleyball began in 1956 and was the
brainchild of the Dutch sports committee. This game originated in Germany and whilst international competitions were held from 1967 onwards, it took until 1978 for the international support organisation for the disabled to admit seated volleyball into the organisation.

At this point, seated volleyball became recognised as an international sport and was admitted into the Paralympic programme. However, it wasn't until 1993 that women were able to compete in seated volleyball. In 1976 seated volleyball was a demonstration sport in the Paralympic games and it made it as a medal sport four years later in 1980.

The game is played over five sets and it is the first team to reach three sets to win the match. The first four sets are played until one team reaches 25 points and also has a two-point advantage. Should the game enter a fifth set, it is played only to 15 points but retains the two-point margin rule. When the ball reaches one side of the net that team then has up to 3 hits to get the ball back over the net. It is possible for the other team to block the ball and failure to get the ball over within three hits results in a point to the other side.

It should be noted that there was a disabled volleyball standing version but this was removed in the 2000 Olympics as they did not feel it met the criteria of a Paralympic sport.
