Introduced in the very first modern Olympic Games in 1896, shooting has developed into a popular and well supported event in the Olympic Games with a total of 15 modern events now appearing. Women were able to enter the games from 1968 although for thirty years they competed alongside the men until in 1996 the events were finally separated. In 1992, a Chinese woman won the mixed shooting event. It was this win that led to the division of men and women from 1996 onwards.

Shooting involved important hunting techniques in the early 15th century with sporting clubs throughout Europe being set up to encourage the development of skills. During the 19th century, the sport of shooting became more widespread and recognised as a modern pastime rather than as simply a means of hunting. Since its inception, shooting has gained popularity on an international scale and every continent is represented at the games.

There are broadly three categories of events: pistol, rifle and shotgun. With the pistol and rifle events, a target is aimed at with bullets with points being scored depending on how close to the target the shot lands. Targets are set at 10 metres, 25 metres of 50 metres.

Shotgun events involve mobbing targets, with scores being given for those who hit the most targets accurately. Despite the length of time that shooting has featured in the games, it has only been televised since 1992.
