An exhibition of new photographs, marking the end of one era of working under London’s railway arches and the emergence of a new, opens today (May 9) at west London’s famous theatre, the Lyric Hammersmith.
The images, by Hammersmith photographer David Murphy, capture the current occupants of a row of Victorian arches. Practical, powerfully individual, and the antithesis of big business, these creative men and women depend on this unusual, inner-city environment to give them both freedom and a community.
The oldest subject is 81, the youngest 27, and between them they represent the evolution of traditional skills into modern media. As a group, the people they serve range from celebrity garden designers to local pensioners.
“We are thrilled to host David Murphy’s exhibition of photographs at the Lyric Hammersmith. We aim to be at the heart of our community and the stories behind these stunning photos are a fantastic insight into the lives of the people of Hammersmith.” Joanna Down, Head of Communications
Portrait photographer David Murphy’s subjects include Kylie Minogue, Tommy Walsh and burlesque performers.
