“Daryl Brown is a highly talented young sculptor working hard and successfully in developing his personal sculptural language. Counterbalancing organic and stereo metric shapes, he combines and contrasts materials and surfaces, construction and shaping in a free and thrilling way to build his quasi-figures. He achieves a very individual new take on the formal language of the 70’s New Sculpture, 90’s blob shapes and DIY bricolage. The construction is often accentuated with bright colours, spatially involving and playfully evoking the effects of gravity. With his eclectic and exciting mash-up, he turns a formal approach into mimicking tragicomic effects.”

The Residence Gallery is delighted to present ‘GOSH & DERR’ a pivotal solo exhibition of new work by recently discovered East London sculptor DARYL BROWN. Brown first captivated our attention with his gravity-defying ‘Judo Series’, which was short-listed for the Hackney Wood Art Prize (2010). We have since hunted him down in his studio surrounded by the Olympic building-site, to find an army of impressive life-like forms ready for action. His major development as an artist is clear and we are fortunate to unveil the fruits of his labor this 2012.

“My work is an attempt to shatter the idea/creation divide. I am fascinated by materials and approach them like an alchemist; taking them from the real world, chewing them up, and spitting them back out. Constantly bored of repetition, each work is a precursor to the next. I am master and slave trying to steer my ram shackled vessel as it hurtles downhill picking up the detritus of the my world as it goes.” – Daryl Brown
