Traversing the Glimmer

"You fasten your seatbelt. The plane is landing. To fly is the opposite of travelling: you cross the gap in space, you vanish into the void, you accept not being in any place for a duration that is itself a kind of void in time: then you reappear, in a place and in a moment with no relation to the where and when in which you vanished. Meanwhile, what do you do? How do you occupy this absence of yourself from the world and the world from you?" - Italo Calvino

Traversing the Glimmer explores the ephemeral qualities of the post and pre-event, and questions the nature of the event itself. What happens just before and just after an event? And how do we begin to understand it at a remove from the event itself?

Eight artists consider the transient qualities of short-lived sensations. Exploring what occurs in a moment of depersonalization or an out-of-body experience, and whether these glimmering sensations and experiences give us access to something that exists beyond the self, another reality or perhaps even the collective unconscious.

We falter and stumble, reaching for language that evades us, existing beyond a bridge of articulation. Standing on the other side of the bridge, the experiences and sensations beckon. Through art, we journey across to them. These are exercises in speaking when words cannot.
