FESTA para os TAMBORES SILENCIOSOS'.

A night of Maracatu and Brazilian Roots Music, Song and Dance.

FREE ENTRY!!

Maracatu Estrela do Norte and Maracatu Baque do Sol are getting together for a night in honour of all the Maracatu masters and Maracatu groups from Pernambuco in the North East Brazil. It is in particular, a night remembering the 'Silent Drums' - the drums and groups that have gone before and are no longer with us, but who kept the flame of traditional Brazilian roots culture alive.

During the afternoon, from 3 till 6pm there will be an open rehearsal/workshop in maracatu drumming in preparation for this year's Notting Hill Carnival. These sessions are open to all levels, from beginner to advanced. Participants contribute six pounds each. It is free to watch.

In the early evening there will be performances as part of the Party for the Silent Drums, with percussion, song and dance. Performances start at 7pm and will finish at 9.30 with music from DJ K (Brixton Beach Party) finishing off the night.

Maracatu Estrela do Norte are a London-based group performing music and dance from the Pernambuco region of northeast Brazil. Formed in 2002 they were the first group of this style in the UK. They play Maracatu de Baque Virado – a vibrant style of music that dates back hundreds of years and is rooted in Afro-Brazilian culture.

Baque do Soll is an Oxford based drumming, singing and dancing group also known as Sol Samba. The group performs at parades, festivals, clubs and outdoor events. Along with vibrant costumes and dynamic movement, the atmosphere and bass-heavy sound never fail to get people dancing!

Maracatu de Baque Virado is powered by the alfaia (bass drum) whose powerful and syncopated rhythms punctuate the beat of the caixa (snare drum) gongue (cowbell), and abê (shaker). It’s music that goes straight to the soul!
