The 2012 season will feature two great operas and a new ballet.

17th May: La Bohème, Puccini's romantic opera, is an intense love story. Based on a novel and play by the French writer Henry Murger, it is set in 1830s Paris. Four friends – a poet, a painter, a musician and a philosopher – struggle to make ends meet. The penniless poet, Rodolfo, fall in love with a poor seamstress, Mimi. But it is winter, she is dying of consumption and he cannot afford to look after her. He pretends that he no longer loves her and they eventually go their separate ways. On the brink of death, Mimi returns to see Rodolfo one last time, determined to die with the man she loves.

30th May: Falstaff, the larger than life, portly knight of Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, is the subject of Verdi's last operatic masterpiece. This opera offers fast-paced wit, action, jealousy, intrigue, confusion and comic chaos, all set to music of the most consummate invention. With a bravura ending in praise of laughter, Falstaff is a wonderful way to experience the colour and character of opera at its most entertaining and rewarding. Falstaff is part of the World Shakespeare Festival, which is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company for the London 2012 Festival.

16th July: Metamorphosis Titian 2012 is a unique collaboration between choreographers, contemporary artists, composers, The Royal Ballet and The National Gallery. Three great paintings by Titian in The National Gallery collection inspire new works by such choreographers as Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon, working with artists including Chris Ofili and Mark Wallinger. An extraordinary meeting of extraordinary talents in movement, image and sound, Metamorphosis Titian is part of the London 2012 Festival.
