On the 30th of June this year, glamorous geezers from across Britain are invited to run the longest and loudest race of their lives. It’s a ten kilometre sprint around London’s Highbury Fields; done decked out in frocks, fishnets and push-up bras.
The Great Drag Race, which is organised by the xFoundation in support of the charity Prostate Action, is the country’s most colourful, unconventional, and downright fabulous fundraising event. On June 30th this year it will be dragging the issue of prostate cancer into the spotlight.
The race’s 10.2km represents one long stride for each of the 10,200 men lost to prostate cancer each year, and looks to break down the wall of silence that surrounds the condition. Whilst it is the second most common cause of cancer death in UK men, killing nearly as many men every year as breast cancer kills women, a worrying 70% of men know nothing about the disease or its symptoms.
The xFoundation and Prostate Action are calling for men of all ages to stretch their calves, hamstrings, and senses of humour, and make a commitment to run. The race is open to runners of all abilities for just a £10 entry fee, and there is no minimum sponsorship amount - the only entry requirement is to look fabulous. Participants can register online at www.prostateaction.org.uk/greatdragrace.
The Great Drag Race is a fantastic day out for the whole family, featuring live music, cabaret, and entertainment that will run throughout the afternoon. The event is being sponsored by Beyond Retro , Rooftop Film Club and Rude Grrl .
