Cinematography and the Artist's film: A practical workshop

This workshop enables emerging and established artists and filmmakers to explore the range of image capture formats currently available to them.

Recently there have been significant developments and challenges for artists working with the moving image. The difficulty in achieving 16mm colour film prints has forced more artists to consider acquiring and presenting material digitally, though a lack of clarity over the pros and cons of some of these formats remains. This situation creates a unique set of opportunities and challenges for artists and no.w.here is interested in the possibilities this has for an artist's practice.

Both film and digital acquisition each have their advantages in certain situations, and this workshop sets out to investigate this.

Workshop participants will shoot standard and super 16mm, RED camera, and Canon HD digital SLR cameras under technical supervision. The workshop will be led by established filmmaker and cinematographer Tim Sidell-Rodriguez and is supported by Fujifilm, Deluxe Soho, De Jonghe Film Post Production Laboratories and the Aubin Cinema.

This 3 day workshop will:

Explore the theoretical, practical and core technical elements of cinematography (lens characteristics; depth of field; exposure & metering and colour temperature) alongside the aesthetic characteristics of each format. A key aim of the workshop is to facilitate a very real comparison of these formats through group activity under technical supervision.

Examine the strengths and weaknesses of various shooting formats and work flows within reach of an artist production and how the shooting process, post-production work flow and aesthetic qualities differ and will affect the making of the work. Participants will shoot short sequences on Standard 16mm, Super16, HD and Canon 7D DSLR and the implications of shooting RED and 35mm will also be discussed.

Look at the role of the cinematographer within an artist film production and the process of collaboration between artist and cinematographer through case studies, informal discussion and a screening of examples.

The workshop will begin with an introductory screening at the Aubin Cinema which will include HD and 16mm material. The main workshop will take place over the following weekend, and the final screening will take place at Aubin in which material shot on film will be projected as film, while material shot on Super16 will be scanned to HD and projected digitally along with other digital formats.

Tim Sidell-Rodriguez is a cinematographer working in artists film, drama, commercial and music video and continues his own practice as an experimental filmmaker. Tim has been the cinematographer of multiple artist productions including Bethan Huws, Runa Islam, Shezad Dawood, Emily Wardill, Karen Mirza & Ruth Beale, Doug Fishbone, Andy Holden, David Ryan and Isabel Rocamora. Tim’s first feature film as Director of Photography achieved international distribution and he is shooting his second feature during the summer of 2011. Tim is also a part-time senior lecturer at the Cambridge School of Art, working with BA Film & Television Production, Photography and Fine Art undergraduate students.
