Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance’s annual Summer Opera returns to Blackheath Halls with the UK premiere of Stephen McNeff’s award-winning The Secret Garden, originally written for the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada in 1985. Trinity Laban’s talented students, directed by Kelly Robinson, Banff’s Director of Theatre Arts, and conductor Dominic Wheeler recreate the magic of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s best-loved book.
The story begins at the bleak Misselthwaite Manor, where Mary Lennox, a sickly, bad tempered child torn away from the loveless life she knows in India, has been sent to live with her uncle, a grief-stricken widower. The Manor holds many secrets, one being a garden, shut up since the death of Mary’s aunt. With the help of new friends, Ben Weatherstaff, Martha and Dickon Sowerby, Mary discovers not only the garden, but also a cousin, hidden away from the world by his grieving father. Can Mary battle on against the tyrannical housekeeper, Mrs Medlock, and bring life and happiness back to Misselthwaite?
