A scuba diver swims alongside a friendly Beluga whale, as the gentle giant smiles straight at the camera. An orangutan emerges from the early morning mists in a Borneo rainforest. Mysterious figures stalk the streets of a Mexican town celebrating the Day of the Dead. A man dances in front of an electric sun at Tate Modern. And a lone adventurer makes a jaw-dropping descent as he abseils a thundering 225m high waterfall.

These are just a few of the glorious and engaging images that can be seen at the Society when the winning entries from the 2011 Travel Photographer of the Year awards - the world's leading photography competition - make their public debut in a magnificent, free-to-view, exhibition.

The exhibition also showcases a number of archive images from the Society’s own collection, giving visitors a chance to view pictures dating back to the pioneer days of photography – such as a wonderful historic shot of Papua New Guinean tribesmen quizzically examining an old gramophone. These images have all been specially selected to tie-in with the contemporary photographs on display.

It also features a showcase of work by the 2011 awards’ overall winner, the American photographer Louis Montrose, together with photographs taken in India by Stuart Dunn, when, as part of his prize from last year’s TPOTY awards, he travelled to India to document the work of the Elephant Family charity. Finally, there will also be images shot earlier this year by the 2007 winner Cat Vinton, when Travel Photographer of the Year took her to photograph His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
