Dishoom – London’s homage to Bombay’s old Irani Cafés - on St Martin’s Lane in Covent Garden, will be celebrating the Islamic feast of ‘Eid al-Fitr’ with a special menu that will be available from 19th August until 2nd September.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in the Muslim calendar. It marks the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, during which millions of Muslims around the world fast during daylight hours, devote themselves to prayer, and give alms and food to the poor. On Eid al-Fitr, (literally ‘the celebration of the end of the fast’), the first day of the new month, Muslim families say special prayers, dress in their finest clothes, and sit down to enjoy a suitably lavish lunch – their first meal enjoyed in daylight for an entire month.

This year, Eid al-Fitr falls on Sunday 19th August*, and to mark the occasion Dishoom will begin serving a special menu of Eid delicacies and Dishoom favourites on this day. And as an extra festive treat, from 4pm onwards, guests will be able to enjoy sweet ‘paan’ (a popular Indian digestive, with spices and candied fruits), made freshly for them; and a mehndi-walli (henna artist) will be lending her talents to decorate ladies’ and girls’ hands with traditional, festive henna patterns. All guests will also be served traditional mithai (Indian sweets) on the day of celebration.
