Willow weaving and basketmaking workshop

Try out a variety of basketmaking and willow weaving techniques at this special traditional craft workshop. Using only basic hand tools and willow rods, you will make several items to take home including a trivet or teapot stand, a fruit bowl and a simple sculpture. No previous experience is necessary: all you need to bring is your enthusiasm and your interest — all tools and materials are provided. The workshop is led by Christine Brewster.

Willow
Willow trees are commonly found in wetland habitats, and we have numerous willows growing here at London Wetland Centre. Willow is particularly useful for people as it grows back quickly after being cut or 'coppiced'. People have used willow for centuries for wickerwork, and the tree's shatter-resistant wood is also perfect for making cricket bats.

Christine Brewster
Christine has been making baskets for twenty years. Attending a two day basketmaking workshop sparked off a hobby that turned into a profession. Moving on from a career in IT, for the last ten years Christine has worked full time as basketmaker, chairseater and teacher of basketry. She runs her business from her studio in Berkshire.
