This 30 minute talk will explore the main concepts and trends within modern, abstract art through a focus on the current exhibition In Astratto: Abstraction in Italy 1930-1980. Italian abstraction developed out of the pioneering experiments of Futurist artists such as Giacomo Balla from 1912 onwards. Many figures were associated with the movement and their work proved to be incredibly varied, ranging from Optical illusions and geometric art to works that were constructed from everyday materials and canvases that were stretched and slashed. The talk will be followed by a tour of the exhibition.
