An outwitted landlord, romantic intrigue, blind jealousy and a rather large wardrobe all feature in these two marvellously witty examples of French opéras-comiques. Though little-known today, both Philidor and Grétry were renowned in eighteenth-century France as composers for the operatic stage, and these two melodious and ensemble-driven masterpieces cannot fail to enchant modern audiences.
At 6pm there will be a pre-concert talk by Jeremy Gray
