The Mulkere Academy of Traditional Irish Music runs two classes every week at the Irish Cultural Centre Hammersmith (ICC), one on Thursday evenings and one on Saturdays.

Brendan Mulkere is an inspirational teacher and has a strong reputation for running classes in Irish traditional music in London and the Home Counties. He has taught many well-known musicians including John Carty, James Carty, Niall Keegan, Brian Kelly, John Blake and Michael and Joe Searson. He is a visiting lecturer on the MA Irish Traditional Music programme at the University of Limerick.

Brendan teaches students (from beginners to advanced) at the ICC in groups on the following instruments:
Violin
2 row B/C Button Accordion (8 bass)
Irish tenor banjo (4 string)
Mandolin
Whistle/Flute
Concertina
If you don’t own an instrument, please talk to Brendan before making a purchase.
If you are a complete beginner a ‘D’ whistle is an excellent and inexpensive starting point.

All age groups are welcome and the relaxed and easy atmosphere ensures that everyone, from beginners to more advanced musicians, makes progress on their chosen instrument. For those wishing to develop their grasp of the music, Brendan specialises in developing both the repertoire and the technique associated with each instrument. Ornamentation and variations, both rhythmical and harmonic are demonstrated and further development encouraged. All resource material is supplied.

Both adults and children are invited to take the exams in Irish Traditional Music offered by the London College of Music (Thames Valley University). Taking part in exams is optional but can concentrate the mind and give extra confidence. Fifty-five students taught by Brendan took exams at the last opportunity receiving form Grade 2 to Grade 8. Grades 6 to 8 carry UCAS points (for those intending to study at University).

Public performance is encouraged and there are three concerts a year at the ICC where students play together. Earlier this year the Mulkere Academy again played on the Main Stage at Trafalgar Square in March 2011 as part of the St Patrick’s Day events. Students from the Academy have started a weekly session at the ICC and in a nearby Hammersmith venue.

Specialist workshops are held each year with visiting musicians who later join the students on stage for a concert. Recent visits have included Niall Keegan (flute and course leader MA Irish Traditional Music Performance programme at the University of Limerick), John Rynne (flute and Director of the Ennis Trad Festival), Martin Quinn (button accordion) and Jack Talty (concertina).
