Oliver Peyton, the man who has transformed dining in many of Britain’s public spaces, is turning his attention to a new creative project - Friday night’s at Peyton and Byrne restaurant The National Café. From 28th September, the restaurant will throw open its doors each week to anyone in the hospitality, creative industries or any foodies with something interesting to say for an evening of brilliant food, great conversation and the element of the unknown.

Oliver comments: “The National Gallery is an amazing space and I want to use it to create a convivial experience that unites the best elements of the London dining scene: spectacular food, wine and cocktails, interesting conversation, culture, together with passionate and talented people. I see this as the foodie equivalent of an open-mic night: you never know what might happen and that’s part of the fun. I’m speaking to lots of people but very open to suggestion – if you have an idea I want to hear from you.”

Already confirmed for the eclectic line-up are an evening of Japanese street food with Emma Reynolds from hit Soho restaurant Tonkotsu alongside legendary Bloomberg food critic Richard Vines, an Israeli tasting menu from one of Tel Aviv’s hottest chefs, a fusion of art and food that will see diners viewing Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Two Crabs’ before feasting on crabs, and a wild autumn flavours menu from up and coming Irish chef Robin Gill, fresh from stages at NOMA and Extabarri.

Tickets will cost just £25 per person, including dinner and a cocktail on arrival, less than a regular dinner at many restaurants in the area. A selection of interesting and affordable wines will also be available to choose from. Diners can sit on separate tables or communally as they choose, and for those that want to get involved, there will be ample opportunities to quiz the evening’s hosts and guest speakers, and bounce around ideas with fellow diners.

From urban beekeepers to cheesemakers and perhaps the next Rene Redzepi, anyone could appear to join in the conversation. Watch this space…

Friday 28th September: Bloomberg food critic Richard Vines, will team up with Emma Reynolds from Soho-based Japanese restaurant Tonkotsu for an evening of Japanese street food and katsu curry.

Friday 5th October: Chef Robin Gill an expert in wild ingredients, will present a menu using ingredients such as wild mushrooms, nuts, British seafood and herbs. Biodynamic wines will also be under the microscope, with specialist importer Caves de Pyrene on hand to showcase the best examples currently in the market place and talk diners through the ancient methods of production.

Friday 12th October: An evening with Oded Oren, one of Israel’s most established chefs, who has recently relocated to the UK from seafood restaurant Turkiz in Tel Aviv. Oded will create a menu based on his signature style, which celebrates the Mediterranean’s most vibrant flavours: fresh herbs, zingy citrus, smoky spices and peppery oils.

Friday 19th October: Fusing food and art, guests will view Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Two Crabs’, before tucking into a crab-based feast prepared by three of Peyton and Byrne’s house chefs working together.
