Daniel Stier's 'In my country' is a contemporary portrait of London told through its incredibly diverse population. Shown as part of Photomonth 2012.
As the host of the 2012 Olympic Games the worldʼs eyes have been focused upon London, but the world was already here: 40% of all Londoners were not born in the UK.
This phenomenon is the starting point of 'In my country' - a series of portraits depicting immigrants living in London. In each portrait Pakistanis, Poles, Ghanaians, Indians, Peruvians all don their national dress. The dress serves as a symbol of their cultural heritage and lends their portraits a timeless quality. Some wear their outfit only on special occasions and have changed clothes exclusively for the purpose of posing for the photograph. Others present themselves more naturally, their traditional dress also serving as their day-to-day clothing.
Stour Space will be showing a selection from the series, taken between 2007 and 2009. All photos are shot with a large format 4x5" camera.
