Hoxton Art Gallery presents Mathew Tom's first solo exhibition in London. Tom presents a culmination of his different cultural experiences through his work; this includes living in India and moving to London from America. As an American now living in London he has become deeply interested in the classical nature of the artworks that can be found here. The artist believes contemporary art in London has revolved around 'a purposeful lack of aesthetics' and that this is unfortunate considering the collection of classical works and selection of antiquities that one can draw inspiration from by living in Europe. Schooled at Goldsmiths, the father school of conceptual art in London, Tom was further pushed away from conceptual practices believing these to be 'devoid of history and beauty'. The artist focuses on classical European drawing techniques, pattern inspired by fabrics from India and impasto painting techniques learned in Chicago.
