The Young Vic opened in 1970 as a place in which younger directors, designers, actors, writers and technicians could work alongside the world's great theatre artists to present exciting productions at the lowest possible seat prices.

Low prices were in part possible because of the intimate auditorium, built cheaply with a rough, light-industrial feel. This was all party of a dream of creating the inclusive, class-free society to which its originators aspired.

Over the last forty years, the company has established a powerful reputation at home and abroad. In particular, the Young Vic has begun to be recognised as the major theatre in this country in which young directors can develop and practise their art.

London's most cherished theatres

We've put together a list of what we think are London's greatest theatres.

Sibling to The Old Vic, the slightly more delicate theatre space resides at the other end of The Cut in Waterloo. With a great café and bar upstairs it is even worth a visit if you’re not seeing a production. The Young Vic specialises in the work of young directors and writers so you can always be sure of a contemporary spin on things.

Lovely, friendly theatre with great views of the stage and comfortable seats. The bar is basic, but serves delicious light food and at a fair price. Unpretentious and accessible to all... great place

Sometimes the theatre - real, proper theatre - can still feel a bit stuffy. But The Young Vic is so far from that. The last play I saw was a new piece of contemporary performance and deserved its run.

Plus the bar is awesome with a great terrace to use during summer.
