No spirit divides opinion like gin does, from its reputation as ‘mother’s ruin’ and featuring in Hogarth’s bleak Gin Lane to its current resurgence in trendy cocktail bars. Beefeater has been produced in London since the 1800s, and this distillery in Kennington offers an interactive tour detailing the history of gin in the capital. In place of a tour guide visitors have an iPad app to guide them round the exhibition; the tour includes stories from the days of the Prohibition as well as a guide to the ingredients used and the production process. At the end of the one-hour tour there’s a complimentary gin and tonic. There is also a shop on the premises selling Beefeater merchandise and of course, gin.
