Well, it turns out that our continental cousins were right: you don't need to drink excessively to the point of nasal vomit to have a good time; moderation actually works out pretty nicely. Plus, the hangovers are half what they were.

This little Iranian restaurant just off Edgware Road has been going strong for a many years. Although you can consume alcohol on the premises it’s BYO only, and given the large portions of grilled meats and the keen prices, it makes for a very inexpensive meal.

This boutique hotel was once the home of Gregg Wallace’s infamous first restaurant (where he was subject to much ridicule for serving up dishes like boiled ham and carrots). In its place there is now an all-day restaurant serving soft drinks, alcohol-free wine and mocktails, to go alongside a crowd-pleasing menu of fish and chips, steak, and rotisserie chicken.

Still unknown to many, Meat & Shake should be on the radar of anyone who loves a good burger. Inspired by southern BBQ, there are all kinds of burgers, including the Ruby Murray with tikka masala sauce, and our favourite, the Von Longhorn, piled high with fries, sautéed onions, bacon, Monterey cheese and an onion ring, all in the same burger. You won’t miss the booze at all as the milkshakes are a meal in themselves, with interesting concoctions like fig and cinnamon, and pistachio and marshmallow.

After a hugely successful stint as a pop-up, Redemption opened a permanent bar on Chepstow Road, one of the chicest streets in Notting Hill. Their specialty are cocktails like the beet-o-tini with beetroot, orange juice and coconut water, along with a range of vegan dishes like raw courgette pasta with brazil nut “Parmesan”.
